VMWare’s Platform is the New Age OSS for Open RAN

Tech

RAN Intelligent controller is the bedrock for the management and control of Open RAN networks. By contrast to traditional OSS systems, it works like an application store where third parties can provide solutions. Artificial intelligence plays a key role in this environment for automation, monitoring, and network optimization.

There are two types of applications on this platform—x-Apps, and r-Apps. The x-apps are real-time applications for monitoring network performance and spotting shortfalls. r-Apps, on the other hand, mine data accumulated over time to improve the models, policies, and configurations for informing parametric shifts in performance.

VMWare’s platform will bring together the RIC and create an app store for the distribution of applications from developers. The first of the apps for raising the productivity of the spectrum is now available from Cohere Technologies.
