Private Network: 5G

The 2025 MLB All-Star Game in Atlanta demonstrated how private 5G networks can enhance sports broadcasting and fan experiences. T-Mobile deployed a dedicated private 5G network at Truist Park and The Battery Atlanta entertainment district to support Fox Sports’ television production and MLB’s technological capabilities.

Fox Sports leveraged the private 5G infrastructure for a 55-camera production, including wireless camera systems that extended coverage throughout the ballpark and adjacent entertainment complex. The network enabled seamless connectivity for specialty cameras, including drone shots, helicopter coverage, and a FlyCam system traveling from The Battery Atlanta into the ballpark.

The private network managed massive communications requirements, supporting 140 wireless communications packs to coordinate between broadcasters, MLB officials, ESPN, and other rightsholders. As Fox Sports’ Brad Cheney noted, “There’s really no system large enough out there that’s not cellular-based that can do the amount of wireless audio packs we need for communications.”

For the first time in All-Star Game history, every umpire wore body-mounted cameras. Base umpires used MindFly chest cameras, while the home plate umpire wore a third-generation RF Wireless Mask Cam. The private 5G network ensured reliable transmission without interference from the crowded wireless environment.

MLB utilized the private network to power its Automated Ball-Strike system, making its All-Star Game debut. The system uses cameras and sensors for precise ball and strike determinations, with the private 5G network providing low-latency connectivity to relay decisions instantly to players and officials.

The Battery Atlanta entertainment district, with its shops, restaurants, office buildings, apartments, and hotel, generates significant wireless traffic during major events. The private 5G deployment ensured Fox Sports maintained reliable connectivity despite the congested wireless environment.
