Vertical: Manufacturing
Application: Connected workers, digital data collection, automation, IoT applications, worker safety, real-time decision-making
Ecosystem: NTT Data, Celona
Private Network: 5G
Celanese Corporation has implemented private 5G networks at two of its Texas manufacturing facilities through a partnership with NTT DATA. The deployment covers the company’s Clear Lake and Bishop plants, representing large-scale connectivity solutions for complex industrial environments.
The Clear Lake facility holds particular significance as one of the world’s three largest acetic acid production plants. Celanese, headquartered in Irving, Texas, is a Fortune 500 corporation and the world’s largest producer of acetic acid and vinyl acetate monomer. The company operates 25 production plants and six research centers across 11 countries, primarily in North America, Europe, and Asia.
NTT DATA’s fully managed Private 5G service addresses the unique challenges of industrial connectivity in manufacturing environments. The deployment ensures secure, reliable connectivity which improves automation, worker safety and real-time decision-making by eliminating signal gaps and interference in complex industrial settings.
“The challenging part is the large deployment area given the coverage needs for the client and the special operations for manufacturing sites such as Celanese,” explained Parm Sandhu, vice president of enterprise 5G products and services at NTT DATA. The implementation tackles critical operational challenges to ensure uninterrupted logistics, production lines, and workforce communications in large outdoor production facilities with specialized operating requirements.
Celona provides both the core network and radio access network components for the deployment. The core network operates on-premise with a cloud orchestrator managing network operations for the managed services. Initial applications focus on connected workers and digital data collection, with plans to expand into additional IoT use cases.
“Our collaboration with NTT DATA strengthens our ability to implement advanced connectivity solutions, enhancing responsiveness, safety and efficiency for frontline teams,” said Sameer Purao, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer at Celanese.
The partnership between NTT DATA and Celanese extends beyond basic connectivity implementation. The companies are actively developing new applications in manufacturing, automation, and industrial efficiency as part of Celanese’s broader P5G rollout initiative. This collaboration represents part of a comprehensive Industry 4.0 transformation aimed at modernizing operations through secure, high-speed connectivity.
NTT DATA has positioned itself at the forefront of Industry 4.0 innovation since introducing what it calls the world’s first enterprise Private 5G platform in 2021. The fully managed service is designed for secure, scalable connectivity that integrates seamlessly with digital operations, powering transformation for recognized global brands.
“By deploying Private 5G services, they’re unlocking secure, high-speed connectivity that supports automation, enhances worker safety and enables real-time decision-making. It’s a foundational step toward building more agile, intelligent and resilient operations, and we’re proud to support them in that journey,” stated Prasoon Saxena, Global President and Co-Lead for Products Industries at NTT DATA.
