Ecosystem:  Nokia

Private Network: 5G

Nokia and Deutsche Bahn have successfully deployed what they claim is the world’s first commercial 5G radio network operating in the 1900 MHz spectrum band specifically designed for railway communications. The deployment represents a major milestone in the railway industry’s transition from legacy GSM-R technology to the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS).

The network has been implemented at Deutsche Bahn’s digital railway test field in the Ore Mountains region of Germany, where it operates on live outdoor test tracks. This real-world deployment environment allows both companies to validate the technology’s performance under actual operating conditions.

Rainer Fachinger, head of DB’s telecom platforms, called the partnership with Nokia essential to bringing “cutting-edge innovations into real-world rail operations” according to statements from the companies. The deployment builds on previous successful trials between Nokia and Deutsche Bahn using 5G technology in the 3700 MHz spectrum band.

The new 5G network incorporates Nokia’s AirScale portfolio equipment and features a 5G Standalone core architecture designed to meet railway operational requirements. Key technical capabilities include built-in failover mechanisms, self-healing network functions, and real-time monitoring systems that ensure high availability and operational efficiency critical for railway safety systems.

Rolf Werner, head of Europe at Nokia, emphasized that deploying 5G in the n101 band represents a milestone for FRMCS readiness, enabling automated train operations, smart infrastructure and stations, and enhanced service reliability. The 1900 MHz band is specifically allocated for railway communications across Europe, providing dedicated spectrum that reduces interference from commercial mobile networks.

The deployment serves Deutsche Bahn’s broader digitalization initiatives and will support the European FP2-MORANE-2 project, which advances digital railway transformation across the continent. This represents coordinated efforts among European railway operators to standardize next-generation communication systems.

Technical specifications include low-latency performance essential for safety-critical applications, enhanced capacity for increased data traffic from digitalized railway operations, and improved reliability compared to existing GSM-R systems. The network enables automated train operations, predictive maintenance systems, and intelligent infrastructure management capabilities.

The current test deployment will inform future pilots and eventual nationwide rollout decisions, allowing Deutsche Bahn to validate performance metrics before broader implementation. This positions the company as a leader in railway communication modernization among European operators and demonstrates how private 5G networks can be tailored for mission-critical industry requirements.
