Deutsche Telekom has partnered with the Helmut Schmidt University/University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg (UniBw) in Hamburg, Germany to implement an innovative 5G Standalone network leveraging Ericsson infrastructure. This private 5G network will support the Bundeswehr Centre for Digitalization and Technology Research (dtec.bw), a university innovation center.
“5G Standalone will give a further boost to our research into digitalization and future technologies,” said Prof. Dr.-Ing. Gerd Scholl, chair of electrical measurement technology at Helmut Schmidt University/University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg.
The dedicated 5G network operates in a 100 MHz slice of commercial spectrum owned by Deutsche Telekom near the UniBw campus. With Ericsson’s 5G core built on cloud-native infrastructure, the platform can scale efficiently while delivering the ultra-low latency, high reliability, and network slicing capabilities that make 5G SA well-suited for research. Scientists can partition virtual sub-networks on demand to safely evaluate innovative configurations in areas like network management automation and logistics
