Vertical: Ports
Application: Real-time location tracking, cargo monitoring, incident prevention, drone surveillance
Ecosystem: Eviden (Atos Group), Markoja
Private Network: 5G
Eviden has secured a strategic contract to deploy a private 5G network at the Port of Ploče in Croatia, marking a significant advancement in the port’s digital infrastructure. The deployment features key components of Eviden’s Lifelink solution and represents a major step in the port’s digital transformation journey through the Smart Port project, aimed at modernizing logistics, improving operational efficiency, and enhancing security.
The Port of Ploče serves as a critical logistics hub in Central and Southeastern Europe, and the deployment of a dedicated 5G network will enable seamless, real-time connectivity across port operations. The project is being delivered through a collaboration with local partner Markoja, which provides construction and maintenance services for telecommunications and automation equipment.
The implementation centers around Eviden’s Lifelink solution, which is specifically engineered for mission-critical environments. The solution offers secure and resilient communication, low-latency and high-throughput connectivity, integration with IoT, AI, and edge computing, plus custom engineering for complex operational landscapes.
The private 5G network will support multiple operational capabilities designed to enhance port efficiency and security. A real-time location system (RTLS) will enable accurate tracking of ships and vehicles, improving traffic, mooring and parking management within the port, and increasing security by preventing unauthorized access.
Advanced cargo monitoring represents another key component of the deployment. The implementation includes smart cameras and sensors for automated cargo identification and analytics, improving the safety and efficiency of terminal operations. This automated approach promises to streamline cargo handling processes while maintaining high safety standards.
Safety and emergency response capabilities receive significant enhancement through the new network infrastructure. The deployment includes thermal cameras, fire sensors, and air and sea quality measurement sensors, along with a local weather station, to strengthen safety protocols and emergency response capabilities. These environmental monitoring systems provide comprehensive situational awareness for port operators.
The private network will also support real-time drone operations for cargo and infrastructure monitoring. This aerial surveillance capability adds another layer of operational oversight and security monitoring across the expansive port facility.
Senior executives from both organizations emphasized the significance of this deployment. “This implementation is a pivotal move toward smarter, safer and more connected port operations to support the Port of Ploče’s digital agenda,” said Sandi Marušić, Head of Eviden, Atos Group, in Croatia.
The port authority highlighted the expected operational benefits from the new network deployment. “Through this agreement, we will significantly enhance and digitalize processes within the port area. This will ultimately enable better traffic management, increase efficiency in the transport of goods and passengers, improve safety in cargo transport and port operations, and reduce pollution,” said Tomislav Batur, Director of the Port of Ploče Authority.
