Ericsson and Telia Help Magna Test for Auto Safety

Auto testing Private LTE and 5G

Magna, a leading global automotive supplier, has partnered with Telia and Ericsson on their NorthStar 5G innovation program to develop advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and vehicle safety technologies. As part of the collaboration, Telia and Ericsson are building a private 5G test network at Magna’s proving grounds in Vårgårda, Sweden.

The 5G network will utilize Ericsson’s 5G millimeter wave technology operating on the 26 GHz band with 400 MHz of bandwidth. This will enable the ultra-low latency and multi-gigabit speeds required to test Magna’s latest vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication platforms and Magna’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) solutions in real-time. The advanced connectivity will be used to share data between vehicles and infrastructure to provide early warnings to drivers about potential hazards.

According to Magnus Leonhardt, Head of Innovation and Strategy at Telia Sweden, “Magna is exactly the kind of company we envisioned joining us when we started the NorthStar program. The solutions they develop require ultra-fast, reliable connectivity to collect data in near real-time. This is a great opportunity to push 5G and millimeter wave to the limits.”

The NorthStar 5G network interconnects with Telia’s public 5G infrastructure, allowing Magna to leverage the speed and coverage across broad geographical areas. Bill Snider, President of Magna Electronics, said, “By utilizing the latest advancements in mobile networks, we are able to accelerate the automotive domain by offering sensor enhancements and, as a result, offer more capable and competitive ADAS products. Our focus is not only on meeting challenging technical requirements but also on developing products that can help anticipate critical situations to prevent accidents, ultimately making the roads safer for all.”
