BT and Ericsson Deploy Private 5G Network at Belfast Harbor to Drive Port Innovation

Port Private LTE and 5G

Vertical: Seaports

Application: Improve operational efficiencies

Ecosystem:  Ericsson, BT

Private Network: 5G

Private 5G networks are revolutionizing port operations across the globe, with Belfast Harbor leading the charge in the UK and Ireland. Through a strategic partnership between BT and Ericsson, this major maritime hub has deployed an advanced private 5G network across 35 acres of operational port space, setting new standards for port efficiency and innovation.

The impact of this network deployment extends far beyond basic connectivity. At Belfast Harbor, where over 1.75 million people and half a million freight vehicles pass through annually, the private 5G network serves as the backbone for a comprehensive digital ecosystem. This infrastructure supports the movement of 24 million tons of goods each year, carried by various vessels from ferries to container ships.

The private network implementation delivers tangible benefits across multiple operational areas. Port authorities can now optimize transport and logistics processes in real-time, leading to smoother operations and enhanced productivity. The high-speed, low-latency connectivity enables advanced applications that were previously impossible, from remote inspections that improve worker safety to environmental monitoring systems that support sustainability goals.

Looking ahead, Belfast Harbor is exploring innovative applications that combine 5G with emerging technologies. The integration of artificial intelligence, Internet of Things devices, and connected autonomous vehicles promises to enhance public safety and security while addressing climate change challenges. These initiatives extend beyond the port itself, contributing to the broader development of Belfast City.

“One of Belfast Harbor’s key strategic ambitions is to become a smart port that engages creatively and effectively with customers, visitors and employees. Following a successful test program last year, we are pleased to have engaged BT to bring 5G technology into Belfast Harbor and delighted that this private network is a first for the UK and Ireland,” said Joe O’Neill, Chief Executive of Belfast Harbor.

This deployment represents more than just a technical upgrade – it’s a strategic investment in the future of port operations. By embracing private 5G technology, Belfast Harbor is positioning itself at the forefront of maritime innovation, demonstrating how modern ports can leverage advanced connectivity to meet the evolving demands of global trade while prioritizing efficiency, safety, and sustainability.
