Bringing the Future Closer: Private 5G Network Deployment at Harwell Campus

Vodafone Private LTE and 5G

Vertical: Research

Application: Asset tracking, drone detection, machine-to-machine connectivity, condition monitoring, augmented/virtual reality

Ecosystem:  Vodafone

Private Network: 5G

A new era of connectivity has arrived at the prestigious Harwell Science and Innovation Campus near Didcot, Oxfordshire. Vodafone has been selected by Oxfordshire County Council to deploy and manage a dedicated 5G Standalone (SA) private mobile network across the 700-acre campus.

The initiative forms part of the broader England’s Connected Heartland (ECH) scheme—a government-funded program aimed at enhancing 5G wireless capabilities throughout Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Central Bedfordshire, and Cambridgeshire.

Home to over 240 organizations employing approximately 6,000 people, Harwell Campus serves as a hub for innovation across quantum computing, space technology, and life sciences. Notable residents include the National Quantum Computing Centre, European Space Agency, and UK Health Security Agency.

This private network deployment offers significant advantages over public networks, providing the high-speed, low-latency connectivity essential for next-generation applications. The network’s enhanced security and customization capabilities will support specialized services impossible to implement on conventional infrastructure.

“I am particularly excited that this project can serve as a framework for implementing 5G at other science parks across the ECH region, benefitting UK industry,” noted Dr. Barbara Ghinelli, director of innovation clusters at UKRI-STFC.

Work on the project is expected to commence in the coming weeks, with applications ranging from improved telehealth services to smarter manufacturing processes. The infrastructure promises to deliver faster research capabilities, comprehensive data collection, and real-time communication and control of scientific instruments.

Claire Harris, head of SME business at Vodafone UK, emphasized the broader impact: ” This initiative will not only boost efficiency and productivity but also foster the development of new use cases. The enhanced connectivity will empower businesses and research institutions to thrive, driving UK economic growth and technological advancement.”
